What’s great about social media is that we can create our safe space. There is a lot that we can control. The same can be said for taking a step back and examining your presence in all of this. When taking a social media detoxification, you set the perimeters for how you’d like to go about taking that break. Nobody knows what you need during this break from social media more than you. Do you need your weekly activity to drop to zero on all platforms? Do you find that one or two platforms have been particular challenges to positively engage in? Do you find that it is more enjoyable and manageable to cruise through social media only in the mornings, during your lunch hour, the evenings, or only on the weekend? Nobody can tell you what kind of detox that you need to take because nobody knows your social media habits better than you. I will say that you will get what you put into this exercise. So you have to be honest with yourself.
The death of George Floyd has made the world all aware of what is going on and forced those who have turned a blind eye to the issue to choose to be on the right side of history or not. Some people whose eyes are being opened and want to work to change this country for the better may not know what to say or what to do now. We are not obligated to do the work for them but I encourage you to encourage those coming to you to continue to seek out the knowledge and resources that they need to educate themselves and support Black lives.
The most important thing to remember when finding out what books work for you is being okay with the fact that you will not click with every book and that is perfectly okay. If you do not finish a book, there is no reason to feel guilty about it. Reading is subjective so even if you know that a book is technically good, it may not be right for you. It’s fun to get caught up in the latest Oprah Book Club pick, Shondaland recommendation, latest book to movie adaptation, and hot book of the moment but don’t put pressure on yourself to finish or like a book that is simply not working for you. You’re not in school anymore, no one is forcing you to read something that does not bring you joy.
The past few months have been so hard on all of us. Harder for all those who are fighting the pandemic from the frontlines. If you are one of them, thank you. It’s because of you that the rest of us are able to go on with our lives. We will be eternally indebted.
We do not know when and how this global crisis would end. But it’s a reminder for all of us to reassess the priorities of our lives, which in essence come down to this— taking care of our family and of ourselves.
So please stay home and please do take good care of yourself. And that includes becoming a little mindful of your beauty routine as well not only because it will make you look good, but also because it will make you feel good. And we all know how important it is to feel good about yourself when you are looking after everyone else.
