Women all around the world seem to have been baffled by the apparently simple question about the frequency in which they should wash their hair. While some prefer washing their hair every day, there are people who like to do it every alternate day or even once or twice every week. Back in the 1950s it was a common practice among women to pay a weekly visit to the hairdresser to have their hair washed and styled. So it turns out that the final decision is conditioned by a variety of factors including personal preference and social acceptance. But how would you react if I told you that you can go without shampoo forever? Now, before the statement grosses you out completely, let me assure you that it is not as bad as it sounds. Rather, following are some of the most wonderful ways in which you can go ‘poo’ free and yet flaunt an envious crown!

Baking soda: Using baking soda as a cleansing agent on your hair is really easy. Just mix 1 tbs of baking soda with every 8 oz of water and you are all set.  Keep this handy in a bottle, may be your empty shampoo container, and use it when you feel the necessity to wash your hair. The application process is simple too. Just pour it on your wet hair and massage your scalp and hair roots thoroughly and rinse. Be sure to rinse well because you don’t want to leave behind powdery substances on your hair. It seems that there is no hard and fast rule about the ratio between baking soda and water. It can be customized to one’s needs depending on a variety of factors like the length of hair, the season, etc. So, for instance, during the winter when the hair is naturally drier, you may need less amount of baking soda than compared to the summer when your hair is a lot greasier.

Soapwort root: As its name suggests Soapwort does have a soapy consistency. That is why it has been used in the cleansing process for ages. It is mild in nature which makes it excellent for washing your hair too. In order to make your natural hair cleanser with soapwort roots all you need except the root is boiling water. Begin by crushing the soapwort roots and then pour boiling water over it. Let the mixture stand for around 30 mins. Strain the mixture using a sieve and use the liquid as your shampoo. Alternately, you can soak 1 ½ tbs of dried and chopped soapwort roots in 2 cups of distilled water and leave it overnight. Next morning, place this mixture in a covered saucepan and bring it boil. Keep it covered for 20 mins as it simmers on very low flame. Remove the pan from heat and let it cool down to room temperature. Strain the liquid and use it to wash your hair. You may even add few drops of lavender or rosemary to your shampoo.

Soap nuts: Many people especially in Asia have used soap nuts as a cleansing agent for thousands of years. You may wish to try it too especially since the process is really easy. Simply remove the seeds from the soap nuts and soak them overnight in water. Use this water to wash your hair later on. One problem though is it does not lather at first. So you really have to work your way through your scalp. And beware of the liquid getting into your eyes because if it does, it burns just like soap.

It may take a while before you give up shampoo completely. Sometimes you may overdo things, sometimes things may turn out to be messier. But remember that you are doing yourself a world of good-by going that extra bit. The transition period might take some time but just hang in there!
